Lois's Story

Hi All, I grew up in Netcong and left NHS in 1966. (You may remember me as the girl that played saxaphone in the school dance band.) Moved to Florida where I finished school and took some college courses. I married and had 2 children, a daughter and a son, who are married and have 3 grandchildren between them. Divorced and have taken my maiden name back. I worked at different jobs until 1978, when I began working for Suburban Propane, starting at the bottom and working my way to management. I had no idea that was to begin my career. Left Suburban in 1985, went to work for EmpireGas, traveled a lot and enjoyed the change. I left EmpireGas in 1988 and went to work for Synergy Gas to start a "scratch" branch. I began with a rental space, no employees, no vehicles, no tanks, etc. Ordered them, trained the employees, delivered gas, installed appliances, piping, etc. along with my employees until they were sufficiently trained. I loved it. Then I became ill. In 1996 I left my career before the doctors finally found a thyroid problem, thinking that was the resolve. But that was just the beginning. The medication helped at first but I, gradually, grew weaker. I became a real estate agent, thinking I could work around my illness, but soon found out that I couldn't do more than 3 hours a day and I was exhausted. It wasn't until Jan. 200...Expand for more
2 that they finally figured out that I have Myasthenia Gravis (grave muscle disease). I was happy to finally have a name for what ailed me and began treatment. There's no cure but it is managable with medication. It has really changed my life. So I have, pretty much, learned to accept and live with the disease and weight gain. Life has been good to me. Not always wonderful, as I've had my troubles like most, but I prefer to think of those times as learning experiences. As I age, I look back on what I thought would be the end of the world for me at that time and realize that most of these things were pretty petty and if we learn by them, we can move forward in a positive way. That's what I do; move forward, taking one day at a time, appreciating what I have and thanking God for my childhood in Netcong. It was a wonderful place to grow up. I remember we went to bed and didn't lock our doors. Crime was, pretty much, unheard of. The local police were your friends and we only needed a few. I remember Mr. Cavanaugh and "Mooch" as the crossing guards on Rt.206. All the kids loved them. Things sure have changed. When I was 12, I broke my neck during the summer doing acrobatics. It healed and I never told anyone. I was pretty quiet about my personal life. Now, I am a loud mouth! LOL! Things change and we never know what our future holds.
